Chewie was surrendered to Pumpkin’s Acres after he developed a large abscess on his cheek and his family could no longer care for him. The abscess was the size of a golf ball, and on top of that, he had bad dental disease and a really wonky tooth that was growing into his cheek. The infection in his cheek was so bad that it started spreading throughout his body and into his lungs, and for a while we weren’t sure if he was going to make it.
Thankfully Chewie pulled through but he needed a lot of supportive care from his foster mom, and he still didn’t want to eat hay (which apparently was normal for him according to his previous family). We brought him in for a CT scan to get a better idea of what’s going on with his tooth roots and it showed that he has a tooth growing behind his eye which means he’s at risk of developing a retrobulbar abscess. Chewie was already an older guy when he was surrendered and with his high medical needs, we decided to keep him as a permanent resident of the rescue. He’s currently best friends with Jasper and he was friends with Orville before Orville passed away.
